1st Varsity 8 Victorious at WPI
Trinity Men’s Rowing trekked up to Worcester, MA this Saturday of Easter Weekend, where they battled not only WPI, Colby, Ithaca, and University of New Hampshire, but also strong headwinds and heavy rain.
The Bantam’s 2nd Varsity 8 were first to race on the morning. Challenging conditions at the starting line left many in the crew unable to hear the start call, costing them nearly a boat length to the leaders in the critical early stage of the race. Undeterred, the crew battled back valiantly over the 2nd half of the course, overtaking the Engineers and the Camels to move into 2nd place. The Bantams were unable to catch first-place Ithaca.
The 1st Varsity 8 was next to the line in a race that featured its own drama at the starting line. When the flag dropped, one crew did not leave its stake boat. After assessing a false start, the race was called back and re-started. Much like the first time around, the Bantams jumped out in front of the other crews very quickly, opening up a bow-to-stern lead on the field in the opening 500 meters of the race. While both Ithaca and WPI tried moves later on in the race to put their bow balls back into contention, the Bantams were able to hold off both crews to win by a margin of about 7 seconds over the 2nd-place Bombers.
The morning ended with racing in the 3rd Varsity 8, where the Bantam crew finished 4th, ahead of WPI B.
The Bantams return to Worcester next weekend to face off against Holy Cross, St. Joe’s, Connecticut College, and Wesleyan.
