OUR HISTORY

We included all information that was archived at the boathouse. We are eager to update and create the most comprehensive history of Trinity Men's Rowing possible. Please email the program any new articles, photos, and information related to Trinity Rowing.

"To be an oarsmen is to understand the quest for excellence." - B. C. Mooney

Even though program was reborn in 1961, one can see many instances of competitive rowing throughout the college's history. Inside the Friends of Trinity College Boathouse and the College archives, Corax Club was founded in 1849. The Corax Club raced against Harvard, Yale, and the other first rowing schools in the Northeast.

On April 1, 1961, Trinity College Men's Rowing was brought back to life. With a shell from Clark University and a makeshift dock at J.E. Shepherd's farm, the founders of Trinity Rowing laid the foundation for the team. With the team building off each year's success the program continued to rise. Trinity won an unprecedented nine novice eight championships in ten years at the Rusty Callow Regatta (predecessor to the New England Rowing Championships) from 1962 to 1971. As momentum continued to build, Trinity made three trips across the pond to the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in 1969, 1971, and 1976. Trinity won in 1976, and were finalists in 1969, and 1971. Along with a strong heavyweight program, the men's lightweight team competed at a high caliber. The lightweights won the Dad Vail Regatta in 1980 and 1981. With the foundations that coaches Norm Graf and Burt Apfelbaum, they cemented the true meaning of what it is to be a Trinity oarsmen.

In 2003, coach Larry Gluckman joined the program and brought Trinity back to its glory. From 2003-2009, the program won the Collegiate at the Head of the Charles twice, over a dozen gold medals across all boat classes at New Englands, eight gold medals at the ECACs, and a win at the 2005 Henley Royal Regatta in the Temple Challenge Cup. With Kevin MacDermott as the current head coach, Trinity rowing has continued its past achievements. With Kevin at the helm and strong-willed athletes, there is a bright future for Trinity rowing.
